New Champions Online live today
January 25, 2011
So today is the new Champions Online update with the new payment option goes live, called Champions Online: Free-for-all. I hope it works out well for Cryptic with this transition.
There are already enough MMOs for me at the moment and in the pipeline, so will not jump into Champions again directly now. But with a lifetime subscriptions there is no rush for me anyway.

I really have no interest in the CO FtP game. Being locked into archetypes is too much of a restriction to me, especially given that they are poorly balanced and generally weaker than custom builds from what I’ve read. I do plan to sub up again some time however, it’s probably my favorite MMO I never made it very far in. And the revamped early game sounds like a lot of fun.
Yes, the revamp of the early parts is what I am most interested in seeing what changed.
I think the idea to have specific archetypes kind of makes sense, given that it may not be all that easy to figure out good choices from the in-game info when you have full freedom. There are details there, but seeing individual trees does not necessarily make you see the forest itself.
I cannot comment on how they have managed to implement those archetypes though, have not really been following that in detail.
If one has the full power spectrum to choose from there are some good player-created guides though that can provide some guidance to find the synergies between different power choices.
I definitely think archetypes make great sense to ease players into the game. The full system gives you enough rope to hang yourself a few times over. I certainly made my share of gimps during my brief Co stint. What I don’t like is that you can’t buy your way out of being restricted to them on a FtP account. Thus for me it’s sub or don’t, FtP isn’t really a viable long term option.
That I definitely agree with – I think Cryptic is doing a mistake here by just handling silver accounts like a dressed-up free trial and not a full-fledged option to play the game.
It is still very much a subscription-based game, they have just made the free trial more attractive.
