Peek at Borderlands

November 7, 2009

I realized this is not my type of game, so I decided not to play again after 1 hour. I liked the art style and the setting though.

Hehehe that’s pretty much what I said, except I didn’t actually play it. Setting and art style thumbs-up, gameplay bleah.

If Diablo with guns doesn’t sound fun to you there is nothing to hold you. The story is also fairly weak, if compelling characters or plotlines are something you care about…again not much to be found there. From what I have gleaned of your tastes from this blog, I would have been a bit surprised if the mindless loot pinata mechanics were compelling to you.

All that said, I feel obligated to point out that numerous commentators (including me) have noted that the first hour or so of the game is boring as hell. The game really only clicked for me once I started working my way down my skill trees and got some decent guns. An hour in I had maybe opened up one weak skill and gotten a decent sniper rifle. While I could see some potential, at that point I was very much questioning whether I had just set $60 on fire.

Sorry to hear that, hopefully you will give it another try at some point.

It took me about two hours before I became hooked. The game can be frustrating and I think it has some balance issues, but I am really enjoying the game. I had the same thoughts as Yeebo, I was worried at first that I wasted money at first.

Are you playing single player or co-op.

Single player is a good amount of fun. Co-op is a catalyst that makes the game exponentially better.

Also, I have a Chronicles series going on. You can check it out here.

I am quite sure Co-op is better, but I have not tried it. I am not that fond of FPS games in general though and I am not that fond of loot pinata gameplay either.
