The colour of the game

June 19, 2009

A recent post in the City of Heroes/Villains forums provide a hint on some things that are coming in Issue 16, with Issue 15 soon to be released now.

Issue 16 will not be the issue when the new expansion will be released and the post just shows two pictures. But given the names of those pictures they do hint at a new customisation feature – colour change of pets and powers. The pictures show a fire controller and a fire dominator, but with new colours for their pets and their firepower.

That is a pretty neat thing, even though it might not be something to scream and shout much about too much outside the core fanbase.

More information will be coming for Issue 16 in July, which my guess is means that it might be released some time in September.

That’s pretty huge. As I recall, power color (and/or effect) customization requires re-writing most of the graphics system. That is why the 5 versions of Sprint all have their own powers, rather than being an option to set your Sprint graphics. As a commenter notes, this does 0 in terms of gameplay, but it is an awesome addition.

They would probably like to have this live before Champions Online, just to take that marketing point away. “Ooh, you’re the second superhero game to let people change their costume colors.” Cryptic would be stuck advertising that you can choose which body part your lasers come from.

Good point. Technically it is no doubt a lot of work to do this and I think it is quite cool myself.

As a competitive element against Champions Online is perhaps a good addition. The cues used by a player to understand what powers are used be slightly different since the colours cannot be trusted anymore.

But the fact that this type of change has been made to the engine is hopeful also that there may be other significant updates coming later.

We have been wanting this pretty much since the game launched. Nothing wrong with a patch that does more for your fans than the PR department.

That said, if you can make purple fire shoot out of your crotch in Champions Online, it may have CoH beat as far as the average gamer is concerned.

    😉
