New LEGO MMO in development by Funcom
June 28, 2012
Just saw this press release from Funcom: FUNCOM TO DEVELOP MASSIVELY MULTIPLAYER ONLINE GAME BASED ON LEGO® MINIFIGURES.
So it seems Lego wants to have another go at the MMO/online market space after the closed down LEGO Universe. Presumably with some learning experience and perhaps a better understanding what they need to do to succeed here.
I would also imagine that it could also help that joint venture between to companies from Scandinavian countries (Denmark and Norway) as corporate culture backgrounds and values may be reasonably compatible.

A company with 3 failed MMOs making ANOTHER one?
The 3rd one has not launched yet and the other two are profitable although not a lot of people playing them currently. How do you define and measure failure?
Well, Anarchy Online has the reputation of one of the worst launches in MMO history. Age of Conan came close to stealing that title. AO was also the bottom rung of the MMORPG ladder back in the MMO Golden Age.
Age of Conan was an unmitigated failure. Two of Funcom’s partners went bankrupt within months of it launching and it’s been limping along for years now just trying to get its budget back.
And honestly, Secret World doesn’t look like it’s going to hit it out of the park. Too similar to WoW and SWTOR in all the wrong ways.
A terrible launch equals launch failure, but not failure for the game necessarily – depending on definition of failure. There is no doubt that both Anarchy Online and Age of Conan had bad launches and they have not been in the top tiers when it comes to number of players, except for perhaps around launch time (quite a few people bought Age of Conan).
I still wonder what is the definition of failure here – not enough return on investment, not enough players, something else?
If there is no definition, then there is just opinion.

Yep. And in my opinion both those Funcom games belong in the top 5 of best MMOs ever made.
