Oh Nemesis my Nemesis
Today I reached a milestone with my highest character in Champions Online, Ais Kreem. By reaching level 25 I was now able to create my own nemesis for Ais. This is one of the unique features with Champions Online and it certainly did not disappoint. So far I have had one encounter with my Nemesis, right after his creation.
The backstory for Ais Kreem is that she was born on Hokkaido in Japan as the daughter of two biologists specialising in Arctic wildlife. On an expedition in the East Siberian Sea where Ais was travelling with her parents, the group got stranded on a small island. This happened to be the location of some secret reasearch conducted by the Russian military. A nuclear blast caused by a research experiment killed everyone in Ais’ group, except Ais herself. Instead she developed powers to control ice and cold, which she now uses to fight evil – in particular unethical use of nuclear power.
Her Nemesis, Dr Jadernij Vek, was the head scientist working in that secret research program. Their goal was to create super soldiers fueled by nuclear power. The explosion that killed Ais’ parents caused an international incident though and the doctor was thrown out of the military as well as the scientific community. Still obsessed with his goal to create a super soldier, Dr Jadernij Vek started a crime organisation selling high-tech weaponry and tools to anyone, including warlords and terrorists. He has a goal of capturing and dissecting Ais, both to get revenge and to try to figure out how she got her super powers and then replicate the process.
So essentially I would have to create some kind of mad scientist nemesis. When you create a nemesis you can choose a theme using any of the existing 18 power frameworks. In my case I choose gadgeteering, keeping some kind of high-tech science theme. Next the type of minion for the nemesis is choosen, and their type of weaponry. Both these choices are from a fixed list of 15 minion types and 6 types of powers, you do not have full freedom here. It is still a reasonable amount of options though. I picked thugs which are part of the doctor’s crime organisation and also choose powered armor for power, to give a high-tech edge to them.
You can also choose the personality of the nemesis (maniac, mastermind or savage). For the doctor is was obvious he should be a mastermind type. After that it is time to create the looks of the nemesis and the full usage of the character creation tool is available.
The result for me was thus Dr Jadernij Vek, a mastermind using gadgeteering and with thugs as minions using powered armor.
Directly after creation it was time for the first encounter. In a museum in the city, a Lemurian artifact was given to the museum during a ceremony with the mayor and the Lemurian ambassador. One which the doctor decided to invite himself to.
This has to be stopped of course, so Ais got to fight through many of the minions, rescuing museum visitors and bodygards and also standing face to face with Dr Jadernij Vek. He was no pushover, as it should be. For a moment Ais was on the verge of being defeated, but managed to turn it around. When he was almost defeated though he escaped, but the people in the museum and the artifact were all saved!
As I have understood it from now on there will regularly be missions to confront the nemesis, plus that the minions of the nemesis may potentially attack at any point in time. If the nemesis at some point is properly defeated one gets to create a new nemesis. Through these encounters one can gain “nemesis points” which allows to buy stuff in the Nemesis store. From what I could see there that consisted of a number of actions figures and a number of very rare equippable items (purple, the most rare kind).
The nemesis system looks like a quite nice feature and should fit well in with the rest of the game. With fast and fun combat and some quite enjoyable missions overall this feels promising for the future.
